Stop Comping: Creating Designs that Developers Can Use

presented by: Jason Savino

Motivation

Throughout my career, I have spent time as designer, developer, tech lead and project manager. No matter what hat I have worn at the time there was always one source of contention ...

The Design Comps

Designers and developers have better
things to do then push your pixels

Current Process

  • Create design comp based on "research"
    (usually by project managers)
  • Pages are printed out for clients to review
    (wtf, it's the web)
  • Comps are reworked until everyone is content
(or until nobody gives a damn anymore)
  • The comps get shoved at developers to figure out
    (again I say, wtf?)

The Result

We don't talk about how the
website looks in a browser.

We talk about how the
website looks in a PSD!

The Problem

talented designers spend a shitload of time creating
fully fleshed-out comps of what a website could look like

talented developers loss shitload of time building sites
pushing pixels to make the site look like comps

Oh Yeah!

Proposed Process

  • Content Strategy
  • Wireframe
  • Design ← Make SOME of the design decisions
  • Front-end Development ← Make MOST of the design decisions
  • Back-end Development

But How Would That Work?

Wireframes

All about the layout

Style Guides

All about the look

The Result

We don't talk about how the
website looks in a PSD.

We talk about how the
website looks in a browser!!
